Faith Reflections

Forgive Us Our Trespasses

"As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Have patience with one another and forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you." — Colossians 3:12-13

As followers of Jesus, we are called to live as He did. We strive to show His love to all people, to be open and understanding, and to do God’s will every day. It is a great challenge of our faith, especially in times of difficulty, to follow the path God calls us to be on.

Part of growing in our faith is recognizing where we fall short in following Christ’s example. This may be easier to see when we face big obstacles in our life and sometimes we forget to turn to our God and our faith for guidance and inspiration. Even when we feel pretty content with our life, we can always take time to reflect on how we can follow God’s examples from the Gospels more closely.

Knowing how ready God is to forgive us our oversights and errors should encourage us to frequently evaluate where we could improve. This dialogue of prayer takes us through reflection, recognition, forgiveness, grace, and growth. And almost always results in our interim failures leading us to a richer balance in our life and in our faith.

“Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” This is one of the most challenging directives for us to truly embed in our relationships with others. Rather than worrying about conquering this faith “skill,” just the attentiveness to trying to work this into our lives can be an incredible journey of reflection on our expectations of ourselves and of others and then of God.

God and St. Jude are there for us, ready to help us improve ourselves to the fullest. Through St. Jude’s intercession, we ask God for the wisdom to see our faults and strengths honestly, but always with the goal of growth for ourselves and our abilities to positively impact the lives of almost everyone we come in contact with.
